Two MTA Workers Struck By G Train Near Fort Hamilton Parkway Last Night
One MTA worker is dead and another injured after they were struck by a G train barreling through the tunnel near Fort Hamilton Parkway last night, said officials.
Two MTA workers were pinned by a southbound G train rounding a curve, around 12am on Thursday, November 3, said cops. The workers, a 53-year-old man and 49-year-old man, were setting up a ‘safe work zone’ on the tracks for a contractor.
Police found the older man in what appeared to be cardiac arrest and the younger man with torso trauma, in the subway tunnel between the Fort Hamilton Parkway and Church Avenue stops, according to an MTA spokesperson.
A third worker on the scene was not hit by the train.
The two men were rushed to Maimonides Hospital and Methodist Hospital, respectively. The 53-year-old man was pronounced dead and the 49-year-old is in stable condition, recovering from broken ribs, said officials.
On the street, firefighters entered the subway tunnel through an emergency exit at East 3rd Street and Caton Avenue, since the incident happened between two subway stops, said FDNY.
Fire trucks and ambulances lined the streets toward McDonald Avenue between Caton Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway, backing up traffic on both roads, according to a witness. “It was a big scene on the street,” said the witness.
The NYPD and Transit Authority are conducting an investigation. Train service resumed around 1:30am, said the MTA.
“We extend our deep felt condolences today,” said New York City Transit President Ronnie Hakim. “The safety of all our workers is paramount and we are in the process of investigating this tragic incident. All safety standards are being reviewed with employees and a “safety stand down” order – requiring all non-emergency track work to cease – has been issued while an investigation is underway.”
