PS 133 Gets $10K To Model Exemplary Dual Language Programs

Park Slope’s P.S. 133 William A. Butler School (610 Baltic Street at 4th Avenue) is set to receive some extra cash from the Department of Education (DOE) in recognition of its excellent dual language programs.

P.S.133 is among the 15 citywide schools with existing dual language programs will become “model dual language programs” for the 2015-16 school year, announced Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña last Thursday. The school made the cut for its exceptional French and Spanish offerings.

P.S. 133 joins two other Brooklyn schools — Gravesend’s I.S. 228 David A. Boody and P.S. 200 The Benson School in Bath Beach.

Boody offers its middle schoolers Russian, Chinese, Hebrew, and Spanish instruction, while Benson is known for its Russian language program for gifted children, which is called Globe.

The schools will receive $10,000 for multilingual instructional materials and staff will have ongoing professional development. This initiative will foster collaborative practices among dual language educators, elevate the quality of programs across the city and provide support and guidance to school staff interested in opening programs.

“When principals and teachers share effective strategies, it’s the students who benefit,” said Fariña. “Dual language programs offer academic rigor for students and the opportunity to maintain their native language while learning a new one and learning about diverse cultures. These 15 schools are leaders in dual language education and, through collaborative practices, we can ensure a supportive, high-quality multilingual experience for even more students.”

Each school designated as a model dual language program will host visits from other school leaders and staff to share best practices and strengthen other schools’ existing or prospective programs.

Last Thursday, Brooklyn politicians congratulated the three schools and their principals, and thanked Chancellor Fariña for the recognition.

“It is a great honor for me to represent IS 228, the David A. Boody School, who over the years, have showcased their many talents, academic successes, and contributions to our community,” said State Senator Marty Golden. “Today, I congratulate Principal D’Angelo and his staff on this extraordinary citywide recognition. I know that their continued efforts will achieve excellence in the languages and will continue to prepare our students for their future.”

The designated model programs also include four in the Bronx, three in Queens, four in Manhattan, and one on Staten Island. They include Chinese, French, Russian, Hebrew, and Spanish dual language programs.
