Try Your Hand at Glass Blowing This Saturday at Urban Glass
Ever wanted to try your hand at glass blowing? Drop by Urban Glass, a shared glassblowing studio space in Fort Greene, for its open house this Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. Locals can sign up to work one-on-one with a glass artist to make their own heart-shaped paperweights, or just come to watch artists blow glass in the studios.
Normally, the studios at Urban Glass are not open to the public, according to executive director Cybele Maylone. The open house is a chance for glass artists to share their work with the community.
Located in a renovated theater at the corner of Fulton Street and Rockwell Place, Urban Glass is the oldest and largest communal glass studio in the United States. For a subsidized fee, glass artists can use the kilns and working areas to make everything from tiny glass beads to large sculptural pieces. Urban Glass also offers classes for all levels, from beginners and teens to professional techniques.
The non-profit finished a million dollar renovation this fall, and now hosts a glass art shop and exhibition space on the ground floor.
