Two Coney Island playgrounds are getting a facelift thanks, in part, to Superstorm Sandy recovery funds secured by City Councilman Mark Treyger.

According to a press release sent Friday, the councilman worked with the City administration and the Parks Department to acquire $570,000 from FEMA, combined with an additional $1.13 million from the city budget, for renovations and upgrades to Nautilus Playground, located by the Riegelmann Boardwalk between West 29th and West 32nd Streets. There are also plans for work at Poseidon Playground, located on Surf Avenue between West 25th and West 27th Streets.

“Residents of our coastal communities deserve to get back everything that they lost as a result of Superstorm Sandy’s devastation,” Treyger said in a press release sent Friday. “There is no question that the people affected by this storm need their homes, hospitals, schools, and libraries back. But they also need safe, clean, parks and playgrounds with working amenities and facilities, and we should be using Sandy money to get these projects done.”

Some of the upgrades to Nautilus playground have already completed, Treyger said, and the rest are scheduled to be completed by June 2016. Treyger said the changes will ensure that residents in southern Brooklyn have access quality community spaces

“Parks is always proud to partner with our local elected officials to make our public greenspaces the best they can be,” said Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver. “The changes to both Nautilus and Poseidon Playgrounds will offer even more top quality amenities to the families in Council Member Treyger’s district, and we look forward to their completion.”
