Director Trevor Nunn On “Pericles” At Theatre For A New Audience

Famous theatre director Trevor Nunn is coming to Brooklyn for his American debut and he’s doing it at our very own Polonsky Shakespeare Center, by Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA), which is kicking off a production of “Pericles” this Sunday, February 14.

There are many reasons why we should all see this play — TFANA is amazing, Shakespeare is timeless, and Nunn has the directing caliber, having directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company, without us having to travel to England — but  Nunn did an interview with American Theatre this week explaining his own reasons for coming.

Apparently, “Pericles” is Nunn’s 35th Shakespeare play — leaving him just a couple of plays away (“King John” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”) from directing all of them — and he’d always wanted to work in America.

I’ve wanted to do Pericles in New York for a large number of years. I wanted to do something here that is relatively unknown and not at all about English history, a play where there’s absolute permission to be fictional. I’m so excited about working with an American company. I’ve done lots of auditions and the standard of work is just sensational.

“Pericles” is “a surging adventure story” with an Odysseus-like hero, mystery, magic, and a “tale of redemption, reconciliation, and forgiveness.”
