Transportation Update

Hopefully, you’re staying put for the next 24 hours or so. If not, you’re going to have trouble getting to where you’re going.

NYC subway and bus service remains suspended until further notice. So is Metro-North, the LIRR, and the Staten Island Railway. Ditto for Access-a-Ride. The Staten Island Ferry is also out of service. If you’re able to make it to the PATH train, it won’t do you much good. That’s shut down, too. To complete the rail and bus shutdown, Amtrak has ceased almost all Northeast corridor  service, as have Port Authority Bus companies.

Are you flying out of JFK, LGA, or EWR today? The Port Authority urges people to just stay away from the airports, but you probably want to check with your carrier – best guess is that your flight has been cancelled, though. All flights out of LaGuardia have just been cancelled, and we may hear the same for the other local airports soon.

Cars are still on the move – vehicles are speeding along Prospect Park West a little more quickly than usual – though we can expect more flooding around low-lying streets. The Brooklyn Battery and Holland Tunnels are closed as of 2pm – other bridges and tunnels are open at this time, though speed restrictions are in effect, and the sidewalk on the GWB is closed. There’s not much traffic, though most major highways in the tristate region are closed.

Alternate side parking rules are suspended today. And you don’t have to feed the meters, either. Same goes for tomorrow.

For those not crazy enough to attempt a foray, here are pretty pictures of the hurricane.
