Transit Officers Mourn Their Fallen Brothers In Bensonhurst

Hundreds of subway officers gathered at the Saint Athanasius Church at 2154 61st Street on Tuesday morning for the NYPD Transit Bureau’s Inaugural Memorial Mass. They were there to mourn and honor 22 transit officer killed on duty or who died from injuries sustained while on duty.

Retired police chiefs, MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota and NYC Transit division President Thomas Prendergast attended the service along with relatives of the deceased officers.

The most recent officer to pass was Captain Barry Galfano, who died on June 26, 2011. He was a former commanding officer of the Transit Canine Unit, who developed cancer after spending months at Ground Zero, according to the New York Daily News.

“God Bless Our Heroes,” Transit Bureau Chief Joseph Fox said during the ceremony.
