Traffic Signals Finally Being Installed By PS889/IS890

DITMAS PARK/KENSINGTON – NYC Department of Transporation (DOT) had promised to have the traffic light by the new elementary (PS889) and middle school (IS890) on the corner of Hinckley Place and Coney Island Avenue up by February.

We were delighted to see that the workers were busy installing the signal equipment this morning, informing us it will be “ready by tomorrow”.

DOT has also reversed a left turn from Northbound Coney onto Hinckley into a left turn from Southbound Coney onto Hinckley Place, eliminating a potentially dangerous left turn right in front of the school.

As of this afternoon, the lights were up, though not lit, and we are hopeful that tomorrow, finally there will be a better way to cross Coney Island Avenue for children at these schools. DOT are still working on a response as to whether any additional safety measures are going to be implemented or if this is it. We’ll update when we hear back.
