The Tovushi Kavkazi Jewish Youth Center‘s youth soccer home took home first place in a city-wide tournament last week.

The indoor tournament, part of the “Under 10” division for the New York City Soccer League, took place during a three-month, nine-game stretch that pitted Tovushi FC against teams from around New York City. The Tovushi players were the only team representing Brooklyn during the tournament, said coach George Kikvadze.

“The kids were really amazed and surprised by the win,” he said. “It was a big honor for all of us.”

Each team played the others once during the tournament, and the winner was decided by who scored the most points during the season. Tovushi won seven out of the nine games. However, Kikvadze said their most exciting win was against NY Salamina SC, a team from Queens, who Tovushi bested 4 – 3 in the match.

“They are one of the top teams and the kids were really happy we beat them because we have always struggled against them,” Kikvadze explained.

While Tovushi took home the trophy for the season, Kikvadze said they lost in the semifinals of the playoffs. However, he said they are looking forward to another victorious season in the spring.

“We have a very strong team. We’re looking forward to competing and finishing in the top two,” he said.

Those who want to get their kids involved in the soccer team at the Tovushi Kavkazi center, located on Avenue Z near East 23rd Street, should stop by and speak to the staff, Kikvadze said. The center has been operating in Sheepshead Bay for four years and offers many different activities for children.

Congratulations Tovushi!
