Tonight: CB7 Transportation Committee To Talk Speed Humps For 17th & 22nd Streets
Community Board 7‘s Transportation Committee will be meeting tonight to discuss several traffic issues, including the potential of adding new speed humps along two local streets.
The New York State Department of Transportation will be on hand to discuss weekend closures of the 39th Street ramp and repair work on the Prospect Expressway to Gowanus Expressway ramp.
Additionally, CB7 will talk about the possibility of installing speed humps on two streets in our area:
- 17th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues
- 22nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues
According to data from the NYPD, which lists vehicle crash reports by intersection, those are some fairly dangerous blocks. In January (the most recent month for which data is available), 17th Street/3rd Avenue and 17th Street/4th Avenue each saw four crashes; and 22nd Street/7th Avenue saw one. In December 2014, 17th Street/4th Avenue saw a whopping 10 crashes; while 22nd Street/6th Avenue and 22nd Street/7th Avenue each saw one.
“As 23rd and 22nd are often used as a cut through for people heading to and from the Expressway and eager to avoid the lights on 5th Ave our neighborhood needs to do as much as possible to create safer streets for all our residents,” writes neighbor Aaron Brashear on Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights, who is also working on getting a stop sign installed on 7th Avenue at 22nd Street — check out this petition for more info, or to add your name in support.
The meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday, March 24 at 6:30pm at the CB7 Board Office, 4201 4th Avenue (entrance on 43rd Street).
