Tomorrow: Southern Brooklyn To Be Sprayed For Mosquitoes

Sections of Bensonhurst, Sheepshead Bay, and Coney Island will be sprayed with mosquito-killing pesticides on Thursday, August 3 and Friday, August 4 to prevent the spread of West Nile virus, said the Department of Health.

Weather permitting, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) will be spraying key mosquito breeding locations in a variety of residential Brooklyn zip codes beginning tomorrow, August 3 from 9am to 6pm until August 4 The intent is to reduce the number of mosquitos and the risk of the Zika and West Nile viruses.

Adulticide — a term used to describe an array of pesticides — will be sprayed from a truck in portions of seven different zip codes (11204, 11214, 11223, 11224, 11230, 11234, 11235). Together, these encompass much of Bath Beach, Bensonhurst, Bergen Beach, Flatlands, Georgetown, Gravesend, Homecrest, Mapleton, Marine Park, Mill Basin, Mill Island, New Utrecht, Ocean Parkway, and Sheepshead Bay.

Bordered by 25th Avenue, 84th Street and 20th Avenue to the West; 65th Street, Avenue P, Ocean Parkway, Avenue U, Haring Street, Avenue R, Schenectady Avenue, Avenue L and Paerdegat Basin to the North; Belt Parkway to the East; and Belt Parkway, Coyle Street, Avenue Z, Stillwell Avenue and Coney Island Creek to the South.

To avoid any discomfort and direct exposure to the pesticide, the DOHMH recommends bringing in outdoor furniture, laundry, and children’s toys. In addition, set air conditioners to the closed position or selecting the recirculate function; and wash exposed skin and clothing with soap and water.
