Journalist Ralph Blumenthal, in today’s New York Times, reports that the gun used to kill former NYPD narcotics detective Vincent Albano in 1985 is at the bottom of Sheepshead Bay.
Suffering from cancer and probably yearning for an outing to his former Brooklyn shooting range — crack shot and jailed underboss of the Lucchese family — Anthony Casso, is singing, writing, and drawing. Referencing the gun that was used to kill Albano, he wrote unapostrophed, “Its in Sheepshead Bay” and drew a map of Sheepshead Bay showing where the gun was dropped.
Saying, “I would go out there in a heartbeat,” former Cosa Nostra Casso offered to show authorities where bodies of murdered victims are located. If the police are willing to risk some major escape risk, Mr. Casso (nickname: Gaspipe) might even be willing to show them exactly where he dropped the gun.
Let’s hope this gun (maybe, even John Favara’s bones in a barrel) is important enough to this investigation for federal agencies to dredge the bay. Even scuba diving relic-seekers like ScubaDuba would be welcome, so long as they bring a huge dumpster for all that non-treasure junk inconsiderate people have decided to dump in the water.
What else they will find sleeping with the fishes in our own Mafia dumping ground? So jump in the bay, Ocean Horizons Scuba, maybe you’ll find an ancient Sheepshead fish fossil or an almandine or Kunz garnet!
