Thursday Night Fever! Travolta Lights Up BIG Oscars
A John Travolta impersonator brought down the house at the the Bay Improvement Group’s annual awards ceremony at il Fornetto Thursday night.
The leisure suit-wearing performer, who strutted into the dining room to the 70s disco classic “Stayin’ Alive,” was the evening’s surprise entertainment. Styled after Travolta’s iconic character Tony Monero, a fictional Bensonhurst club rat from the movie “Saturday Night Fever,” the impersonator cut up the dance floor with a few the female guests, and later led the room in some of 70s most popular dances.
Indeed, the feverishly energetic performer turned up the tempo in the room and got people on their feet at the award dinner.
The Bay Improvement Group honored several members of the community during the event, including Aardvark Entertainment’s Dennis Schifter and Collegium Sounds’ Don Wade, both of whom have helped organize the Bay Improvement Group’s annual seaside festival Bayfest. Awards were also given to Renee McClure of National Grid, the Miramar Yacht Club, Sergeant Karen Brennan from the 61st Precinct’s Domestic Violence Unit, and local firefighter Robert Gnerre.
Some of our readers may remember when Gnerre dove into Sheepshead Bay last year to save a drowning 17-year-old who fell into the water.
“Getting the recognition is great,” said Gnerre. “But anytime your save someone’s life, that’s the best.”
The honorees also received citations from Senator Marty Golden, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, and Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, who stopped by to present her awards.
Sergeant Brennan said she was very thankful for the awards and being embraced by the community.
“I’ve been in the 61st Precinct for the last 10 years and I don’t want to be anywhere else,” she said. “Thank you for this award.”
The evening also had a four-course meal, DJ and raffle for prizes. The Bay Improvement Group’s president, Steve Barrison, also said the organization is still looking for volunteers to help out with Bayfest. You can find out more information here.
