This Week’s Subway Service Changes, Plus Info On Upcoming Southbound Station Rehab

Two things to consider:

• Relatively minor planned service changes starting Wednesday of this week.

• Major construction starting Friday, February 21, that will knock out service to the southbound side of local station platforms until Summer 2014.

First, details on this week’s service changes via MTA.info:

Coney Island-bound Q trains run express from Prospect Park to Kings Highway
Days, 9:45am-3pm, Wednesday to Friday until February 21
Trains stop at Church Av and Newkirk Plaza. For service to Parkside Avenue, Beverley Road, Cortelyou Road, Avenue H, Avenue J, and Avenue M, take the Q to Church Avenue, Newkirk Plaza, or Kings Highway and transfer to a Manhattan-bound B or Q.
For service from these stations, take the B or Q to Newkirk Plaza, Church Avenue, or Prospect Park and transfer to a Coney Island-bound Q.
145 St-bound B trains run local from Kings Highway to Prospect Park
Days, 9:45am-3pm, Wednesday to Friday until February 28
Please allow additional travel time.

And from Community Board 14, on the platform rehabilitation coming to the southbound side of the Parkside, Cortelyou, and Beverley stations:

Southbound Service Station Closures: From Friday, February 21, 2014 @ 11:30 PM through June 22, 2014 the southbound platforms at the Parkside Avenue, Beverley Road and Cortelyou Road Q stations will be closed.
Customers who need to access these stations must take the Q train to the next available stop and transfer to a northbound train to reach their destination. The MTA will have service posters at all affected stations in advance of this service diversion, and brochures will be available at each station agent booth.
The MTA’s website at www.mta.info will provide updated information as this project progresses.

The rehabilitation is slated to include rebuilding stairs, improving lighting, repairing concrete, and painting. We’re hoping the result will be more pleasing overall than construction on northbound platforms, which many neighbors found underwhelming at best (we know we’re still missing a good amount of tile at Cortelyou Road).

The project is expected to wrap up in June, so be prepared for a bit of an extra walk or wait for three to four months. On the bright side, it’s nice that the MTA is holding off until, hopefully, the weather is a bit more tolerable than it has been in recent weeks.

And of course, keep in mind that sometimes scheduled changes get cancelled. Check MTA.info for the latest updates.
