What: White Prism is the moniker of Australian-born songstress Johanna Cranitch (formerly of Johanna and the Dusty Floor), who layers breathy vocals over lush, dreamy synthpop soundscapes. Recalling both vintage Kate Bush and modern electropop à la the Knife, Cranitch’s sound retains its own distinctly haunting character thanks to her ethereal voice.

Tree Giveaway

What: Hosted by Pratt Area Community Council and NY Restoration Project. To pick up your free tree, you must agree to: plant in one of the five boroughs, keep trees properly watered and maintained, and plant your tree in the ground of your yard and NOT along streets, in city parks, in containers, terraces, balconies or on roofs. If registration is closed, a limited quantity of trees will be available on a first come, first served basis.

What: Acclaimed saxophonist and composer Rob Reddy offers a fresh take on the music of Sidney Bechet, the jazz icon Duke Ellington once called “the very epitome of jazz…the most unique man to ever be in this music.” Reddy performs compositions by Bechet alongside his own original material, which is rooted in distinctly American idioms like blues, gospel, and Appalachian music.

“When We Were Soldiers… once and young (WWWS) / The Heart of Darkness”
When: September 19 through October 24
Where: Brooklyn Navy Yard Hospital
What: Photographic installation by German artist and social activist Bettina WitteVeen. Presented as a visual poem, WWWS will weave together over 100 black and white and color analog photographs culled from historic archives, sculptures in the form of large crosses and a walk-in altar with a sound installation. The installation, including WitteVeen’s wide-ranging and visually rich photographs, will philosophically and artistically explore the depth of humanity’s collective shadow as it finds its ultimate expression in war and genocide.

What: Bring a picture and your written short caption/short story that tells the story of your Clinton Hill neighborhood. It can be a picture of a person or persons, a place, a thing, a picturesque memory. All photographic short stories/captions & pictures will be displayed in the Clinton Hill Library for you and your neighbors to see for the month of September 2015.
