Story Time: Shana Corey presents “The Secret Subway”
When: Saturday, March 19 at 11am
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: New York City in the 1860s was a mess: crowded, disgusting, filled with garbage! You see, way back in 1860, there were no subways, just cobblestone streets. That is, until inventor and maker Alfred Ely Beach had the idea for a fan-powered train that would travel underground. On February 26, 1870, after fifty-eight days of drilling and painting and plastering, Beach unveiled his masterpiece—and the rest is history. After all, sometimes it just takes one idea to get things rolling! Brooklyn-based author and editor Shana Corey’s beautiful picture book The Secret Subway will wow readers, just as Beach’s underground train wowed riders over a century ago. Join us for a story time with Shana and discover the fascinating, little-known story of New York City’s first subway. Ages 3 to 8.

Jeffrey Smith (also of the long-running soul/rock outfit the Family Stand), the Soulfolk Experience’s members have worked with artists like Barbra Streisand, Paula Abdul, and the Indigo Girls.
