Community Dance Class

What: BRIC House Ballroom at 647 Fulton Street

Evidence, A Dance Company blends traditional African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word providing a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Author Talk: John Seabrook presents “The Song Machine: Inside The Hit Factory”
When: Monday, October 5 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Brooklyn author John Seabrook, New Yorker staff writer and author of Nobrow, tells the fascinating story of the contemporary music industry in his new book The Song Machine. Starting with the science behind catchy musical “hooks”, the book also encompasses how new songs are created, and the money, business, marketing, and technology that have contributed to the pop music landscape. Seabrook talks about the book and the challenges of translating pop music into literature with actor Dion Graham (The Wire, etc.), who narrates the audio version of The Song Machine. The discussion will be accompanied by music clips that are sure to leave you with songs stuck in your head!
Monday Night Karaoke

Book Launch: Sandra Cisneros presents “A House Of My Own”

What: Cisneros is the author of several acclaimed books including the beloved The House on Mango Street. Her new memoir A House of My Own: Stories From My Life is a richly illustrated compilation of true stories and nonfiction pieces that, taken together, form a jigsaw autobiography: an intimate album of a literary legend’s life and career. Cisneros will sign books following her reading and onstage interview with Jessica Hagedorn.

Geek Chic: Wearable Technology and Cosplay

What: In Partnership with NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, Eyebeamand the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., we will discuss the intersection of fashion and technology and the culture of “Costume Play”. Panelists include Kaho Abe, a Computational Fashion Fellow at Eyebeam and Artist in Residence at the Game Innovation Lab at NYU-Poly where she researches and builds digital games that are played in the physical world, face to face. Attendees are encouraged to come in full CosPlay style!

Author Talk: Larissa MacFarquhar presents “Strangers Drowning”

What: In Strangers Drowning, renowned New Yorker writer Larissa MacFarquhar digs deep into the psychological roots and existential dilemmas motivating those rare individuals practicing lives of extreme ethical commitment. She seeks out organ donors, aid workers, social activists, and a couple who adopts dozens of children, and combines these real-life stories of unimaginable selflessness with deep meditations on the implications of these ethical acts. What: dGrowing up just a block away from The Notorious B.I.G., watching him go from local corner boy to rap superstar, Skyzoo couldn’t help but dream big. The Brooklyn, NY native saw life in all of its “heaven and hell” juxtaposition, being from the infamous home of both Jay-Z and “Do The Right Thing”. He started rapping at age nine, writing about what he witnessed on his daily routines as a child. Those years of observation and living have turned into first person narratives that have labeled Skyzoo as a “new legend” and have led to his albums being critically acclaimed by fans and critics alike. His storytelling has been commended by all walks of literary life, from hip hop royalty to university professors and everyone in between.
