Book Launch: Adam Kirsch presents Emblems of the Passing World: Poems After Photographs by August Sander
When: Monday, October 26 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Amidst the period of intense upheaval from the early twentieth century to the end of the Weimar Republic, German photographer August Sander documented the anger, art, and revival that unfolded around him through his somber photographs of the nation’s people. In his third poetry collection Emblems of the Passing World, acclaimed critic and writer Adam Kirsch brilliantly interprets Sander’s austere portraits of German workers, bourgeoisie, and revolutionaries through poems both intimate and universal. Kirsch launches his book with a reading, talk, and wine reception.
Monday Night Karaoke

Brooklyn Grange Farm Tour

Where: Brooklyn Grange — Meet at BLDG 92 at 63 Flushing Avenue
What: Come check out the world’s largest rooftop farm in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard! We’ll tell you about our daily operations and farming methods, the basics of our business model, and the environmental benefits of urban ag and rooftop farming, then give you some time to explore.

Dance Party: Everyday People

What: Featuring DJ mOma and special guests spinning ’90s and ’00s R&B, reggae, and hip-hop. The fun night also includes live performances, dance contests, culture breaks in our galleries, and a photo booth. Everyday People will also host an art supply drive in partnership with Cool Culture. Make a difference in your community by bringing new or gently used crayons, colored pencils, watercolor sets, or glue sticks. Cool Culture is a nonprofit organization providing arts access to over 50,000 of New York City’s most diverse and under-served families.

Halloween Ghost Stories Party
When: Thursday, October 29 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Ghostly reveals the evolution of the ghost story genre with tales going back to the eighteenth century and into the modern era, ranging across styles from Gothic Horror to Victorian to the New Weird. Collected and introduced by Audrey Niffenegger (bestselling author of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry) and including her own fabulous original illustrations, this is a unique and haunting anthology of some of the best ghost stories of all time. Niffenegger hosts a Halloween reading from the anthology at Greenlight, with appearances by writers included in the collection. Guests are invited to come in Halloween costumes, and the authors will also serve as judges for a costume contest with prizes! Halloween refreshments will be served for a hauntingly festive evening.
