Practice English Conversation Group

Yoga at Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm
When: Monday, July 6 from 6:30-7:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Grange Farm, entrance at 63 Flushing Avenue at Brooklyn Navy Yard
What: These asana sessions are open to practitioners of all levels. Class will begin with a brief centering, a collection of ourselves in breath and space, and will gently evolve into a flow of movement and meditation. In community, we’ll move, breathe and connect to our inner and outer landscapes. Classes held at dusk, so attendees can enjoy the herb-scented breeze as the sun sets behind the Manhattan skyline. **PLEASE NOTE: BYO Yoga mat, water bottle, and please make sure you have a photo ID for entering the yard.**

Community Dance Class

TUESDAY, JULY 7
Summer Supper with Chef Rob Newton: A Benefit To Support The Youth Farm
When: Tuesday, July 7 from 6-9pm
Where: Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm at Flushing and Clinton Avenues
What: A special evening to support farming, food justice, and educational activities on the Youth Farm. Dinner will include beer, wine, and a delicious four course seasonal meal prepared by Rob Newton, chef and owner of Nightingale 9, Wilma Jean, and Smith Canteen in Carroll Gardens. $250 VIP tickets include a 6 pm to 7 pm cocktail hour, appetizers, and a guided tour of the farm, and a sit-down dinner. $125 Supporter tickets include a sit down dinner from 7 pm to 9 pm with remarks from the Chef of Honor and Youth Farm Manger. Raffle with great prizes!

Free Yoga for Adults

Book Talk: Quintan Ana Wikswo and Friends
When: Tuesday, July 7 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Brooklyn-based author, visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker Quintan Ana Wikswo is a former human rights activist whose experiences inform her adventurous transdisciplinary projects. Her new book The Hope of Floating Has Carried Us This Far is a collection of stories and photographs in which characters defy the limits of physics to escape the all too human pain of love and loss. Wikswo talks about her work with fellow author Robert Repino, editor at Oxford University Press and author most recently of the novel Mort(e). The discussion will be accompanied by images from the book on our big screen, and preceded by Wikswo reading, accompanied by her video projections from the book with live upright bass by Brooklyn composer Arthur Kell. Join us for a unique multi-media event from one of Brooklyn’s most engaging artistic and literary voices.

Where: Brooklyn Grange — Meet at BLDG 92 at 63 Flushing Avenue
What: Come check out the world’s largest rooftop farm in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard! We’ll tell you about our daily operations and farming methods, the basics of our business model, and the environmental benefits of urban ag and rooftop farming, then give you some time to explore.

What: What’s all the buzz about? Bees! Now more than ever, bees are having a moment in the sun for their importance in pollinating the plants that produce our food. Head Apiarist Chase Emmons will talk about just these honeybees are so important, explain the tools of the trade, and the basics of getting started with your own hive. From there, you’ll suit up and get to observe a hive-check to see what a healthy hive looks like! We’ll be on the lookout for a healthy queen, bees busy making honey, pollen stores and more.

Author Talk: Louisa Hall and Adelle Waldman

What: A former squash player and pre-medical student, Louisa Hall studied the genetics of psychiatric disorders at Albert Einstein hospital before deciding to pursue a degree in literature. Her new novel Speak is a fictional exploration of the development of artificial intelligence: a mesmerizing examination of the tenuous divide between man and machine. Spanning from the heart of the Atlantic in the seventeenth century to the environmentally-ravaged metropolises of the near future, from the confines of a federal prisoner’s cell to the bedroom of an immobilized girl, it is also a devastating exploration of humanity’s eternal struggle to communicate across the chasms that separate us. Hall discusses her book at Greenlight with author Adelle Waldman (The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.).

“TOBIN EASON – Passion in Motion” Exhibit
When: Through August 13
Where: Gallery Three at South Oxford Space, at 138 South Oxford Street, 3rd Floor
What: The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) is pleased to present an exhibit of nine works on canvas by Tobin Eason. Eason’s paintings are influenced by the dance performing arts scene in NYC. They depict the wide and varied emotions performing artists must portray when performing for an audience. Each work is a reflection of not only the dancer’s beauty aesthetically, but even more importantly, the required expression and passion to achieve artistic excellence. Many of the dancers featured in each painting are established professionals in premier ballet companies in the city, such as American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet.
