Author Talk: “Beauty and Dread: Gabriel Urza and Helen Phillips”
When: Monday, August 17 at 7:30pm
Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: Sarah Bowlin, Senior Editor at Henry Holt & Company, moderates a discussion with two highly praised young authors whose debut novels, while wildly different, explore atmospheres of paranoia and dread while evoking compelling landscapes and rich inner lives. Gabriel Urza’s debut novel All That Followed takes place in a small village in Spain’s Basque Country, where the ghosts of the Spanish Civil War, fascism under Franco, and Basque separatist movements infuse private lives and small-town politics. Helen Phillips’ surreal novel The Beautiful Bureaucrat, praised by authors from Jenny Offill to Ursula LeGuin, takes place largely in a windowless building in an isolated part of town, where a young employee enters data under the watchful eyes of her sinister boss. Urza and Phillips were both inspired by their real life experiences, and discuss the experience of creating their first novel and the translation of strange reality into compelling fiction with Bowlin.
