Author Talk: Sara Novic and Jonathan Papernick

What: Two New York authors present their novels about the effects of war and conflict on families and identity. Nović’s debut novel Girl At War is the story of Ana, a ten-year-old in Zagreb when Croatia’s civil war begins, and the ways in which the legacy of the war haunts her even after she moves to the United States. Papernick has earned critical acclaim for his short story collections The Ascent of Eli Israel and Other Stories andThere is No Other. His new novel, The Book of Stone, is an arresting psychological thriller set in pre-9/11 Brooklyn, where an estranged son attempts to find meaning and purpose to his life as his family’s dark history is peeled back, layer by layer, against the backdrop of religious extremism.

Planting Ceremony

BRIC FLIX: “Tough Love”

What: Each screening is followed by a discussion with the filmmakers, artists, curators, and more. This moving film accompanies two parents as they navigate the often-murky waters of the foster-care system, trying to reunite with their children and prove that they deserve second chances. A co-production of ITVS. A co-presentation with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM).

Fiction Book Group

What: The theme for this season is Shortlisted. For May, the group discusses Anathem by Neal Stephenson, shortlisted for the 2009 Hugo Award. Opening Reception for “The 27th Annual Contemporary Art Education Exhibition”

What: This annual exhibition showcases work in a wide range of artistic media created by students taking part BRIC’s school-based residencies and after-school programs. Among the works presented, the exhibition will include films created by students, such as a documentary video produced by students at P.S. 297 Abraham Stockton, Clinton Hill that uses a compare and contrast approach to the theme of gentrification.

Opening Reception for Cecile Chong: “Time Collision”
When: Wednesday, May 20 from 7-9pm
Where: BRIC House at 647 Fulton Street
What: A Brooklyn-based multimedia artist working in painting, sculpture, and installation,Cecile Chong’s work addresses the process of cultural encounter and entanglement. Born in Ecuador to Chinese parents, her background and exposure to different cultural objects and ideas has driven her fascination with how these influences are visually acquired, represented, and interpreted. The exhibition in the Project Room of BRIC House will present over 20 of Chong’s encaustic paintings as well as guaguas (wah-wahs), her small baby-bundled sculptures made of wax. These little abstracted sculptures serve as an important icon for Chong and are figured throughout her encaustic paintings as playfully hidden little ancestors watching over the frolicking children.

Bike Registration Event

Where: Southeast corner of Myrtle and Vanderbilt Avenues
What: Join the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and our local NYPD 88th precinct for a free bike registration event, 5/21 from 8:30am to 10:30am. We’ll be near the corner, just near the bike lane. Register your bike + stop by for morning coffee and pastries. Register your bicycle with the NYPD at this free event on Myrtle Avenue sponsored by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and the 88th Precinct. Bikes registered with the department are easier to recover if stolen.
