Author Talk: Jonathan Fetter-Vorm and Ari Kelman

Where: Greenlight Bookstore at 686 Fulton Street
What: The graphic novelist Jonathan Fetter-Vorm and the award-winning historian Ari Kelman team up to create a unique portrait of a brutal and defining event in American history: the Civil War. The result is Battle Lines, a monumental graphic history—rendered in Fetter-Vorm’s sweeping full-color panoramas, and grounded in Kelman’s nuanced understanding of the period—offering a series of wholly new perspectives on the conflict that turned this nation against itself. The creators discuss their work with acclaimed graphic novelist Josh Neufeld (author of A.D. New Orleans After the Deluge), accompanied by images from Battle Lines on our big screen.

What: A mash-up edit of 4 Saint Joan inspired films edited and curated by filmmakers Libby Handros and John Kirby director and producer of the award-winning documentary Cape Wind. The chosen films that will be artfully edited together are: Joan of Arc directed by Victor Fleming with Ingrid Bergman, Saint Joan directed by Otto Preminger, Joan of Arc at the Stake directed by Roberto Rossellini, Passion of Joan Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer (silent).

Non-Fiction Book Group: “Seven Days In The Art World”

What: This season’s theme is Identity. For May, the group reads Sarah Thornton’s vivid ethnography Seven Days in the Art World, an international hit published in sixteen languages. The book reveals the inner workings of the sophisticated subcultures that make up the contemporary art world in a series of day-in-the-life narratives set in New York, Los Angeles, London, Basel, Venice, and Tokyo, exploring the dynamics of creativity, taste, status, money, and the search for meaning in life.
