Things To Do In Southern Brooklyn This Week: The Nutcracker, Dyker Lights, Poetry Jam & More

Lots to do in southern Brooklyn this week. Get in the holiday spirit by checking out the Christmas lights in Dyker Heights or go to Fort Hamilton High School to see The Nutcracker. There is also a free movie screening, a poetry jam, chess club and much more.

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights 2015
When: All December long
Where: Dyker Heights, 10th Avenue to 13th Avenue, 81st Street to 85th Street
What: Each December, thousands flock to Dyker Heights to take in the southern Brooklyn neighborhood’s spectacular holiday displays. See giant Santas, sleighs, soliders, raindeer, and so much more. Also, drop by one of the area’s famous bakeries for hot chocolate and cannoli.

Friends Book Sale!

Where: Sheepshead Bay Library, 2636 East 14th Street (Near Avenue Z)
What: Support your local library by purchasing a book. There is a large selection of books from all genres. Proceeds go to support the Sheepshead Bay Library.

The Nutcracker Suite at Fort Hamilton High School
When: Tuesday, December 22, 7pm
Where: Fort Hamilton High School auditorium, 8301 Shore Road (Near 83rd Street)
What: You don’t have to leave Brooklyn to enjoy the Nutcracker this year. Fort Hamilton High has partnered with the Joffrey Ballet School to put on this holiday favorite.
How much: $5 minimum donation at the door.

Movies at the Library: And So It Goes
When: Wednesday, December 23, 1:30 – 3:30 pm
Where: Brighton Beach Library, 16 Brighton First Road (Near Brighton Beach Avenue)
What: Visit your local library to watch this romantic comedy, starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, about a self-absorbed realtor who asks his neighbor to help care for a granddaughter he never knew existed.

Sodom by the Sea Salon

Where: Coney Island USA Shooting Gallery/Arts Annex, 1214 Surf Avenue
What: The Coney Island Museum presents a cross section of Coney inspired works – paintings, watercolors, photographs and drawings – done between 2008 and 2015 by over 75 artists, hailing from Australia to the West End of Coney Island, presented on the home turf where their inspiration began.
