Things To Do In Prospect Park This September
It’s September but there’s still lot going on in Prospect Park this month — whether you want free yoga, volunteer opportunities, roller skating disco parties, or some al fresco food truck dining, there’s something for every member of the family to enjoy.
Here’s a list of the upcoming events in the park through the end of the month:
Wednesday, September 2
Green Market at Bartel-Pritchard Square
Every Wednesday, 8am-3pm
Nestled inside Prospect Park’s tree-shaded southwest corner, the offerings range from a selection of vegetables, fruits, baked goods, plants, and flowers, to fresh-caught fish and organic baked goods. For a full calendar of events and a list of sellers, visit GrowNYC.
KIDtivity
Every Wednesday, 11am-6pm
Blending fitness, fun, crafts and cooking, Lakeside’s KIDtivity is the perfect summer treat. The free program runs every Wednesday from 11 am to 6 pm. Reservations are strongly encourages.
Thursday, September 3
Shape-Up NYC: Gentle Yoga Flow
Every Thursday, 10am-11am
This class focuses on aligning the breath with basic and restorative physical postures to encourage relaxation in body and mind. Each class will include a breathing technique and guided visualization or meditation to move deeper into equanimity and calm. This class is appropriate for those who are new to yoga as well as those who want to gain a greater understanding of how yoga can be used as a tool to reduce stress. Bring your own mat.
Thursday Volunteer Corps
Every Thursday, 10am-2pm
Get involved in your community! The Thursday Corps volunteers perform a multitude of different projects throughout Prospect Park as needed. The corps meets at a different location every week helping in a variety of landscape and horticultural projects. Register online.

Free Fresh Air Yoga

Bend & Bloom and lululemon Brooklyn are teaming up to bring you a summer of free yoga in the park. Join in for an open-level outdoor class at the north end of the Long Meadow. Please bring your own mat.

Every Friday, 12-1pm
An exercise class focusing on your core through a combination of strength, balance and toning exercises that raise the heart rate to burn calories and strengthen the cardio-respiratory system. Workout mat recommended.

Greenmarket at Grand Army Plaza
Every Saturday, 8am-4pm
At what other market can you do all your food shopping, sample local wine and explore Brooklyn’s favorite park? Established in 1989, the Grand Army Plaza greenmarket is the flagship Brooklyn market.
Saturday Woodlands Corps

The Saturday Woodland Corps is a team of volunteers committed to the continued restoration and revitalization of Propsect Park’s 250 acres of forest. Register online.

Join the Prospect Park Alliance for nature education programs at the Prospect Park Audubon Center, the first urban Audubon Center in the nation.
Pop Up Audubon
Every Saturday and Sunday, 12pm-6pm
Join the Alliance for this roving nature education program that explores a different area of the Park each month. In September, learn about the different species of raptors that migrate through Prospect Park or learn about climate change and the environmental impacts on the Park’s ecosystems.
Transforming Food
Every Saturday, 2pm-5pm
Join the Prospect Park Alliance to help make tasty treats in the Lefferts wood burning hearth. Roll up your sleeves and help churn butter, grind corn and peel apples. We will be making herb butter for popcorn and apple pie for all to share. $3 suggested donation.
Sunday, September 6
Early Morning Birdwalk: Fall Migration
8am-9am
This is the month migration gets into full swing, with adult and juvenile birds returning from their nesting grounds to the tropics. Catch a glimpse of a variety of species as they pass through the Park on their way south. Led by the Brooklyn Bird Club, this tour leaves promptly at 8 am.
Parkside Plaza GreenMarket
Every Sunday, 8am-4pm
Located across from the southeast corner of Prospect Park, at Parkside and Ocean Aves, this Sunday market will feature six producers selling fresh vegetables, fruits, cheese, milk, herbs, eggs, honey, meats, yarn, baked goods and more. In addition, the market will feature weekly cooking demonstrations, free recipes and family friendly activities.

7th Annual T.E.A.L. Walk/Run
9am-12pm
The T.E.A.L. Walk/Run celebrates the courage of ovarian cancer survivors and the strength of the families who’ve been touched by the disease, while spreading awareness to the general public and raising money for research. Since 2009, the T.E.A.L. Walk/Run has been New York City’s largest National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Run/Walk, and has raised over $1 million for research and awareness programs. Registration required. $25-40.
Sunday, September 13
Wanderlust Festival

The Wanderlust Festival returns to Brooklyn for its second year. This “mindful triathlon” brings three events together at the Prospect Park Bandshell: a 5k run, an outdoor yoga experience, and a guided meditation — but with a twist. Unlike most triathlons, Wanderlust places community above competition, inner peace above power, and self-awareness above strength. At this triathlon, it’s about slow food to fast run times. Winning is measured in laughs shared and new friends made. Registration required.
Bones of an Old Dutch House Tour
12pm-1pm
Examine the white oak timbers (the bones) of Lefferts Historic House and the many layers that were added, subtracted and changed over the past 230 years. Climb the staircase for a view of the attic’s smokehouse and descend into the cellar for a look at the foundation. This event is for adults and teenagers, and is limited to 10 people. Monday East Side Revival

The Eastside Revival helps beautify two of the Park’s most elegant locations: the Vale of Cashmere and the Rose Garden. Tasks may include raking, sweeping, path edging, and litter removal. Register online.

Mp3 Experiment 12
7-8pm
Improv Everywhere, in partnership with the Prospect Park Alliance, presents the Mp3 Experiment Twelve as part of the BEAT Festival. Participants will download an original mp3 file and convene at a yet to be revealed location in Prospect Park, and blend in. At a pre-determined time, thousands will press play. Hilarity ensues as players carry out humorous, coordinated instructions delivered to their headphones, and everyone else tries to figure out what is going on.

Brooklyn Community Services Million Step Challenge

For 149 years, Brooklyn Community Services has helped children reach their potential, families become stronger, and adults lead productive, fulfilling lives. Walk in the Million Step Challenge and help BCS raise funds to support early childhood education, afterschool programs, academic support for youth, counseling and services to strengthen families in crisis, and job training and wellness programs. Food Truck Rally

The Prospect Park Alliance and Dispatch NY present a sampling of cuisines from around the world from New York’s best food trucks. Trucks in attendance will include DUB Pies, Kelvin Natural Slush Co, Carpe Donut NYC, Toum, Kimchi Taco Truck, Neapolitan Express, Coolhaus, The Taïm Mobile, Snowday, Red Hook Lobster Pound, Brooklyn Organic Coffee & Tea Truck, Papaya King, Nuchas II, Milk Truck, Phil’s Steaks, Ponti Roissi, Gorilla Cheese NYC, Andy’s Italian Ices, and Carl’s Steaks. International Coastal Cleanup

Held every September, International Coastal Cleanup is a program that engages people to remove debris from beaches and waterways while identifying and documenting the types of debris they find. Help with this year’s effort by helping to clean Prospect Park Lake’s shores. All litter that is removed will be recorded accurately and included in the international totals. Be a part of something worldwide! Advanced registration required.
Harvest Festival
1pm-4pm
Come celebrate this year’s harvest at the Lefferts Historic House. Reap, cook and eat potatoes that were planted in our garden back in May. You can also challenge friends and family to potato sack races!
