The Open Corner: June #1
We’re starting this month’s series well into the double digits of June–slightly later than usual. But don’t worry! You’ll still get a full four weeks of work.

I’ve lived in Ditmas Park for over a decade now, and I’ve enjoyed watching this neighborhood change in numerous ways during that time, from the trendy eateries now lining Cortelyou Road, to the recent Newkirk Plaza renovation. In part because of those two transformations, Ditmas Park has enjoyed quite an emergence in the past few years. People FINALLY know where I’m talking about when I mention I live in Ditmas Park!
So, for The Open Corner Series, I’ll use photography to reflect my interpretations of change and transformation, incorporating sights from our picturesque neighborhood. This week’s photo is from the Cortelyou Road subway platform. I love how the vintage, brick advertisement for Greenfield Chemist (still in business on Cortelyou and E 16th), is a quaint reminder of how companies used to promote themselves, especially when juxtaposed with the gritty graffiti of today’s times.
I’m curious…how do you feel about the changes going on in Ditmas Park? Are the eateries on Cortelyou making our nabe hip? Pretentious? Other? Do you think corporate entities such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Subway will affect some of our long-standing “Mom & Pop” establishments? What should NEVER change about our neighborhood?
