The Greenmarket Report: Onion Season
Now that Valentine’s Day is over, you can relax and be yourself and eat some delicious, breath-stinkifying onions again — and our weekly markets have you covered.
Go for a classic and try out an elegant version of quichle Lorraine, where slow-cooked onions are the star. At the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket on Saturday, February 15, visit Evolutionary Organics to grab some of the eggs their chickens just started laying again, and then head to Phillips Farm for a pile of onions.
Then at the Park Slope Farmers Market on Sunday, February 16, stock up on leeks from John D. Madura Farms to make another classic, vichyssoise. The potato-leek soup might be better known cold, but with its endless possibilities, it can certainly be enjoyed hot.
The GAP Greenmarket runs Saturdays from 8am-4pm at Grand Army Plaza. The Park Slope Farmers Market runs Sundays from 10am-4pm along 4th Street at 5th Ave.
