The Great Gilly Hopkins, a film based on the novel by Katherine Paterson, will be filming at two Westminster Road homes this week in Prospect Park South.

The film stars Sophie Nélisse as Gilly Hopkins, a whip smart 11-year-old who bounces from one foster home to another until one foster mother (Kathy Bates) helps Gilly reconnect with her grandmother (Glenn Close). Octavia Spencer and Julia Stiles are also featured.

Filming is scheduled for a total of 14 days in our neighborhood, some of which have already elapsed. Though Wednesday through Sunday is sort of a while, it sounds like the 65-person crew is trying to be extra conscious of neighbors–specifying in a letter that they won’t be bringing any large trucks or campers to our area.

They had some cool cranes parked in those spots last time they filmed, and were very vigilant about taping off lawns, so perhaps they’d just rather have a little extra space to make sure neighbors’ property doesn’t get damaged. According to their letter, they have also agreed to give $350 per day to the Prospect Park South Association.

Neighbors are being asked to move their cars off of Westminster Road from Albemarle to Beverley as well as Beverley from Stratford to Argyle by 10pm tomorrow, May 13, ahead of filming from Wednesday, May 14 to Sunday, May 18. If your vehicle is moved, call location manager Trish at 646-262-0871.
