The Day: Spoken Word, Downward Dog and Spying on Your Neighbors
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
Monday night’s temperatures dropped to 48 degrees, but we’re battling the cold morning with a sunny and warm day today, according to the National Weather Service. That means you can stow the warm blanket away – at least for the daytime. But you’ll need it, or a light jacket, again this evening, when temperatures are expected to dip to 53 degrees. Even though the weekend’s still days away, there’s still a lot to watch, listen to and move to in the nabe. Whichever activity you choose, don’t forget to post your pictures in the Nabe’s Flickr Group.
- New York City’s dense population makes for opportune neighborly spying – or so said Alfred Hitchcock in his 1954 film “Rear Window.” Catch the movie and a discussion with Christian Science Monitor movie critic Peter Rainer at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Rose Cinemas tonight at 7 p.m. at 30 Lafayette Avenue. If you’re a member, tickets are only $8; for general admission you’ll pay $13. Rainer will also stick around after the show to sign his book “Rainer on Film: Thirty Years of Film Writing in a Turbulent and Transformative Era.”
- What do you do when the credits start rolling? Walk across the street to Haitian restaurant and bar La Caye’s “Kreyol Korner Poetry Night”, which welcomes spoken word artist MrJeffDess, known off-stage as Jeffrey Dessources. You can preview his poetic work in this live haiku performance “Growing Up Haitian” or grab a seat at the Lafayette Avenue restaurant between 8 and 10 p.m.
- If you need to work out the stress from your workday, rooftop farm Brooklyn Grange will offer an hour-long yoga class on its roof, overlooking the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the East River and a hopefully spectacular view of today’s sunset. Class starts at 7:45 p.m. They ask that you bring your own mat and pre-register here.
