The Day: Open Studios, a Bike Race after Dark and a Wooden House Walking Tour
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
If you were planning to get away early this weekend, it may be time to reconsider. The National Weather Service forecasts potentially heavy rain throughout today and into tomorrow in advance of Tropical Storm Andrea’s arrival tonight. The city’s Office of Emergency Management released a Hazardous Travel Advisory that’s in effect through early tomorrow morning and has also activated the city’s Flash Flood Plan. If you must drive today, check out these safety tips from the OEM. Good thing the rain is predicted to slacken tomorrow, because local activities abound on Saturday and Sunday.
- Still looking for summer learning opportunities for your children? Long Island University Brooklyn hosts an open house on Saturday for its Children’s Academy Summer Camp. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Pratt Building on the main campus. When you’re done there, take the ten minute walk from LIU to 85 South Oxford Street, where the Irondale Center hosts its open house for upcoming theatre classes from 1 to 4 p.m.
- We’ve mentioned the SONYA Studio Stroll a few times this week and hope you’ll make it out between noon and 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Download your map of open studios here and be sure to say hello to our reporters as they stroll along side of you.
- Tomorrow, there’s plenty of time to see studio art and head back north for the Red Hook Criterium, a bike race happening under the stars (or lingering clouds) in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Two hundred cyclists will participate in a qualifying round at 6 p.m. and the top one hundred will compete in the race at 9:45 p.m. The event is free, so just stop by the intersection of Clinton and Flushing Avenues to catch part of the 32.5 kilometer race.
- After viewing cyclists and contemporary art, you can opt for a more old-fashioned Brooklyn experience on Sunday. Brooklyn Based reports that The Wooden House Project, a group of architecture fans who highlight the colorful planks and beams that once rivaled brownstones in our borough, is offering a walking tour close by our nabe. $15 tickets are available for the event, entitled “The Gingerbread Houses of the South Slope,” which starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Be sure to follow The Nabe for information on Wooden House Project tours in our ‘hood.
