- Manhattan Federal District Court Judge Shira A. Scheindlin ruled on the controversial Floyd versus the City of New York case yesterday, saying that the New York Police Department’s stop-and-frisk policy violates New Yorkers’ constitutional rights, The New York Times reported. City Council Member Letitia James, a longtime opponent of stop-and-frisk, said on her blog that, “today’s ruling reflects the urgency many of us feel about reforming stop and frisk in New York, and preserving the liberties of Black and Latino youth throughout this City. It is imperative that the administration and the police department move to make transparent the rationale for street stops, as well as define long-used terms such as ‘furtive movements’.”
- Barclays Center neighbors are increasingly exasperated with MTV, which will host the internationally televised Video Music Awards at the Barclays Center on Aug. 25, for refusing to meet publicly with community members to discuss the event and for neglecting to donate to neighborhood groups, DNAinfo reported. Locals say that although MTV released a list of street closures and traffic re-routing that will result from the event, the network owes it to the community to hold a community meeting, when residents can ask questions and air concerns.
