The Day: Explosions on Myrtle Avenue, a Party in the Park and Local Stoop Sales
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
We’re excited to let you meet the young news hounds who signed up for The Nabe’s Summer Teen Journalism Workshop, which began yesterday. The three day program covers the basics of community journalism for young writers, who will publish their first post later today.
In the meantime, show us the highlights of your week so far – whether you’ve watched an amazing sunset, eaten a mouthwatering meal, or spotted a baby hawk, share your favorite photos with us on The Nabe’s Flickr page.
- Two explosions shook up Myrtle Avenue yesterday morning, The Brooklyn Paper reported. The first blast burst out of a manhole cover between Washington Avenue and Waverly Place, outside of local restaurant Maggie Brown. Con Edison says that smoldering cables set off the explosion, which started a chain reaction that turned into a fire in the basement of 459 Myrtle Avenue and set off a second powerful, three-story high explosion from a manhole cover in the middle of Washington Avenue, The Brooklyn Paper reported. Con Edison cut off power to the intersection, police blocked off the street and the fire department evacuated several buildings, the paper reported.
- Looking for a swanky (and nearby) spot to wind down after work this evening? Head to Prospect Park Alliance’s Summer Soiree, an annual cocktail gala fundraiser for the park. Enjoy some drinks and come ready to hit the dance floor with music from Brooklyn’s own indie pop band The Drums and local groups Tamaryn and DJ Kilo Kish. The soiree will run from 7 to 10:30 p.m. in the Prospect Park Boathouse. Admission is $85 a person to benefit the park, but if you can get a group of four together you’ll each get in for $75. More information on the event is available on the Prospect Park Alliance website.
- If you’re hawking some of your old stuff at a summer stoop sale, you can get the word out virtually. Patch.com is creating an interactive map of area yard sales, where potential customers can find details like sale time, location and contact info of nearby sales all in one place. Add your yard sale to the Fort Greene-Clinton Hill map here.
