The Day: A Public Hearing, Meditative Strolling and a Music Festival

It’s clear from the heat this week that summer is on the way. In a few weeks, school will be out until fall and you’ll see more kids playing outside around the nabe. (Photo by Patrick Wall)

Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The heat wave that descended on the neighborhood yesterday is expected to stick around throughout the weekend. How will you stay cool in the first sweltering heatwave of the year, locals? If you plan to enjoy some cool fun this weekend, be sure to post your photos in The Nabe’s Flickr group.

  • Jeanne B. Mullgrav, commissioner of the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, announced a series of public hearings in all five boroughs to discuss the allocation of federal Community Services Block Grant funding to support human services in local communities. The meeting for Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, represented by Brooklyn Neighborhood Development Area 2, will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis College, 180 Remsen Street. When you get there, head to room 4202 to help identify the service needs of the community.
  • Stressed out from your workweek and looking for an opportunity to meditate? Consider attending a meditative strolling class on Sunday at 10 a.m. The class, taught by Dr. Mzuri, a traditional Chinese internal medicine and Qigong healing instructor, will take place at the Putnam Triangle Plaza, located at Fulton Street and Grand Avenue. Combining meditation and walking, the class offers a chance to engage your body and spirit.
  • It’s not too early to make your plans to attend New York City’s largest music festival, Make Music New York, on June 21. The festival’s seventh installment will bring 1,000 free outdoor concerts to various public outdoor spaces in the city. Several artists will be performing in Clinton Hill – including Sampo Matsumoto, Griot Blues and The Statue of David, to name a few. Most of the Clinton Hill events will be held at Green in Bklyn on Myrtle Avenue, or Fresh Fanatic on Park Avenue. You can also hear Edwin Vasquez and the P.S. 20 chorus in Fort Greene venues.
