The Day: A Community Food Drive and the Last Outdoor Brooklyn Flea of the Season
Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
It will be a chilly day today with highs in the mid-40s, according to the National Weather Service. Make sure you don’t leave home without your winter coats, scarves, hats and gloves. Temperatures will warm up again a little later this week, only to turn freezing by Sunday. How are you spending these brisk fall days, locals?
- As the holiday season rolls in and we prepare our festive meals, some locals may not have enough to eat. You can help by contributing to an annual community food drive, which will be held at the Teen Challenge Center – 444 Clinton Avenue between Greene and Gates Avenues – tomorrow from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The event is organized by Olanike Alabi, the 57th Assembly District Democratic Organization, District Council 37 and the United Federation of Teachers. Donations of non-perishable items and canned goods will benefit Teen Challenge’s food pantry. For more information, call (718) 398-0750.
- With the cold weather upon us, Brooklyn Flea is holding its last outdoor market of the season this weekend in Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School‘s backyard – as well as its other locations in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Williamsburg. In past years, the market moved to Skylight One Hanson during the winter, but it has outgrown that space. Instead, this winter, the Flea will relocate to 80 North Fifth Street at Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg starting on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The 50,000 square-foot space has room for 200 vendors, including 75 food vendors.
- Tonight, the Brooklyn Academy of Music Rose Cinemas will present “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” a nine-time-Academy Award-nominated film in which two Depression-era dance partners named Gloria (Jane Fonda) and Robert (Michael Sarrazin) compete in a grueling six-day contest for a $1,500 grand prize. General admission is $13, Cinema Club Members can gain admittance for $8 and students and senior citizens can enter for $9.
