Neighborhood Facts: Neither Generous nor Ready to Vote
Brooklyn’s poor give almost twice as much of their income to charity than the borough’s wealthy, says a new Civic Engagement Report from Brooklyn College’s Center for the Study of Brooklyn. The report attempts to gain greater understanding of Brooklyn’s civic health. Included are a few interesting facts and figures about Community District 14 and the nearby neighborhoods:
• We are probably not as generous as we think. A couple of nearby zip codes (11230 and 11210 including much of Midwood, the southern end of Victorian Flatbush and Flatlands) are the second and third most charitable areas in the borough after Borough Park’s 11219.
• Of those eligible to vote, 91.5% of CD14 adults are registered to vote, however, only 52.7% did vote in the 2008 presidential election.
• A solid 28.9% of CD14 adults have non-citizen status.
The report also lays out the party lines in the borough and, as we’ve reported, Ditmas Park sits in very interesting position on the border of Republican and Democratic Brooklyn.
