Updated: Teenager Arrested, Charged With Murder Of Adetunji Ajakaye At Newkirk Avenue & E. 17th Street: NYPD
Updated 11:32am Police have arrested neighbor Oshane Fyffe, 18, and charged him in the murder of Adetunji Ajakaye, 25, who lived in our area and was fatally shot while sitting in his car on Newkirk Avenue and E. 17th Street last month, the NYPD announced late Wednesday night.
Fyffe, who lives on E. 21st Street, between Ditmas and Newkirk Avenues, was caught during a large narcotics raid that the NYPD executed in numerous buildings throughout our area yesterday, August 5, including around Newkirk and Ditmas Avenues and E. 21, E. 22 and E. 23 Streets, according to 70th Precinct Detective Dominick Scotto. About 14 people in total were arrested on narcotics and other charges, Scotto said.
Fyffe was charged with second degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
According to police, Ajakaye was sitting with a woman in a black BMW sedan at the corner of Newkirk and E. 17th when a white sedan rolled up around 12:49am on July 15 and opened fire, hitting the 25-year-old in the chest, thigh, arm, and back. Ajakaye was brought to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The woman was not hurt, police told us.
Adetunji’s death was the second fatal shooting at Newkirk and E. 17th Street in recent months; neighbor Raphael Kurton was fatally shot there at the end of May. Police recently tracked down and arrested Patrick Zephir in West Virginia, charging him with killing Kurton, the NYPD said.
These two incidents occurred during a violent summer in the 70th Precinct, with Harold Abodia, 22, being fatally shot on E. 21st Street and Ian Jose Caicedo-Boza, also 22, being shot in the head on Crooke Avenue. Police recently arrested an 18-year-old and charged him with Abodia’s murder.
The series of fatal shootings have been part of an increasing amount of deadly violence in our community: the number of murders in the 70th Precinct has risen from one at this time last year to eight murders so far this year — a 700 percent increase, according to the most recent CompStat report. The number of shooting victims has also increased, going from 15 at this time last year to 23 this year, which represents a 53 percent jump, according to the same CompStat report.
