Teen Looking For Summer Work? Become A NYC Lifeguard
Need a break from all the snowmageddon, snOMG, snowpocalypse, blizzard to end all blizzards talk? Us, too, so let’s focus on summer!
If your young adult is a strong swimmer, has good eyesight, and is looking to earn some cash, don’t miss the 2016 summer qualifying test to become a NYC lifeguard.
Qualification sessions take place on January 22, 25, 27, 28, and 29 at Chelsea Recreation Center – 430 West 25 Street – in Manhattan. Testing times for all dates are 3:30pm and 6:15pm.
In order to qualify for the NYC lifeguard program, candidates must:
- Be at least 16 years of age by the start of employment (the end of June).
- Have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other – without corrective lenses. Glasses and contact lenses may not be worn during the eye exam.
- Be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds or less, with proper form.
After qualifying, candidates will move on to the Municipal Lifeguard Training Program – a free 40 hour course that focuses on swimming, rescue techniques, first-aid, and CPR. Pool and beach placements will be assigned upon completion of the training program, and after candidates have successfully passed a final written and swimming test.
According to the NYC Parks website, “lifeguards work 48 hours each week and first-year lifeguards will earn a minimum of $13.57 an hour, for a weekly salary of over $650.00.”
Long hours, but the pay could be a nice perk for a teen looking for summer work. Ready to dive in? Be sure to bring a bathing suit, towel, and combination lock to your qualifying test – and good luck!
