CARROLL GARDENS – Milan Schwartz grew up working in the bakery owned by his grandparents, the much-loved Shlukers in Brooklyn, and has now gone on to open an ice cream shop with his wife, Samantha, called Sweet Intentions. The shop is small, pleasantly decorated with a big pink neon sign proclaiming “I licked it, so it’s mine”.

Sweet Intentions, located at 306 Court Street between Degraw and Sackett, the first week of January this year. A winter opening is a bold move for an ice cream shop, but Milan says things are starting to pick up now that the weather is getting warmer.

“[My wife and I thought] let’s just get it rolled out correctly, don’t rush it, and open in January six months until summer starts, get all the kinks out and figure out what works and what doesn’t, and then be ready for summer,” Milan said.

Sweet Intentions proudly serves all organic Blue Marble ice cream, a company that got its own start in Cobble Hill before moving to Flatbush. In fact, Milan says that everything they serve at Sweet Intentions- macarons, coffee, and other goods- are from New York wholesalers.

Milan credits much of his inspiration for the shop to helping his grandparents at Shlukers’ Bakery, as well as his love for the product he sells.

“ [I] was sad to see it go when they sold it and ever since then I was obviously never in this retail space with sweets or a storefront but I was always intrigued by ice cream. I love ice cream, I think it’s a very fun item to sell. You deal with a lot of kids too, and you see how happy kids are when they’re eating ice cream, so it’s a fun business,” Milan said.

Sweet Intentions is open from 10am-7pm Sunday-Thursday and until 9pm on Friday and Saturday. They typically have around 12-15 ice cream flavors that rotate seasonally or as trends change. For adults, Milan says that the most popular flavors are Mexican Chocolate Chip, Raspberry Chip, and Banana Cookie Crumble. For kids, it’s cookies and creme, no contest.
