In tragic news, a 79-year-old man was struck by an ambulance this afternoon and sustained injuries that left him “likely to die,” according to an NYPD spokesperson.

The elderly Asian man was crossing the street on 58th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues at 1:48pm when he was struck by the private ambulance for Maimonides Medical Center that was not carrying a patient, but may have been responding to a call for help.

The man sustained trauma to his pelvis and leg, and was treated by the EMS workers from that ambulance until another ambulance arrived to rush him to Lutheran Medical Center, where he remains now. He has not been identified publicly yet.

The NYPD Highway Patrol and crash investigation team investigated and tested the driver involved. According to the police, there “does not seem to be any criminality at this time.”

We wish the elderly man strength in his hopeful recovery.
