Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) presented Stuyvesant High School senior Winton Yee, 18, with a $16,000 college scholarship last Friday at an awards ceremony at the Time Warner Center in Manhattan.

He was one of six recipients of the 2016 RMHC/ASIA (Asian Students Increasing Achievement) Scholarship Program, which supports local students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.

Yee runs track and field and was the editor of the Humor section of the school newspaper. In his spare time, he enjoys writing and coding. Yee will be attending Stanford University and majoring in English or computer science.

“I’m really grateful for this scholarship because it will help to pay for my education and provide opportunities for my future,” said Yee.

Created in 2001, the RMHC/ASIA Scholarship Program has awarded over $1.5 million to Asian high school students in the New York Tri-State Area. As the largest scholarship of its kind, RMHC/ASIA annually grants six college scholarships worth up to $16,000. Recipients are selected by a judging committee comprised of representatives from leading community organizations and Ronald McDonald House Charities.

“Contrary to popular belief, many Asian American students face significant financial barriers to higher education,” said Michael Anderer, a member of this year’s scholarship selection committee and President of RMHC New York Tri-State Area Board of Trustees. “The RMHC/ASIA Scholarship is a program that recognizes this reality and has gone to great lengths to address it.”

“The continued growth of the RMHC/ASIA Scholarship clearly demonstrates a real need for this program within the community,” stated Christopher Perry, Executive Director of RMHC-NYSTA. “Throughout our 15 year history, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to partner with many outstanding organizations and individuals to ensure our scholarship reaches the students who need it most.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities has been creating, finding and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children for 20 years.
