Crime Report: Street Robberies and Women’s Shelter Assaults
A 14-year-old boy was arrested after he allegedly pointed a gun at a man and chased him along Myrtle Avenue on June 15 at 6 p.m. The boy then allegedly cornered the victim on Carlton Avenue near Myrtle Avenue, pointed the gun at his chest and pulled the trigger. When the gun didn’t fire, the boy allegedly smashed the gun over the man’s head, causing a cut and swelling. The victim was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital Center, where he received stitches. Pieces of the gun were recovered at the scene, police said.
The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not find charge information for the teen.
Including the crime above, 18 felonies and eight arrests were reported in the 88th Precinct last week, compared to 21 felonies and seven arrests the previous week. Four street robberies were reported, one of which was violent. Although street robberies were the most commonly reported felony last week, the numbers are down from two weeks ago, when seven street robberies were reported, all of which were violent. Two assaults were reported at the Tillary Street Women’s Shelter, following two that were reported only three weeks earlier.
Street Robberies
-A 19-year-old was arrested – and police are looking for four other suspects – in connection with the armed robbery of another teenager in an Ingersoll Houses apartment on Hudson Walk. While the 17-year-old victim walked on the public housing grounds, the five suspects allegedly pushed him into an apartment. One of the suspects displayed a gun while another fished through the teen’s pockets, taking a Michael Kors watch, BlackBerry Torch, green wallet and school MetroCards.
Jamel Hines was charged with robbery in the first, second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, menacing in the second degree, petit larceny, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-Derrick Montague, 16, was arrested after he approached a woman who was walking on Myrtle Avenue at Willoughby Avenue on June 13 at about 2:20 p.m. and demanded, “Give me your phone.” He then allegedly snatched the phone and fled. Police do not have information on whether the phone was recovered.
Montague was charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, petit larceny, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-Christopher Cook, 29, was arrested after he allegedly stole a cell phone from a 23-year-old man outside the victim’s apartment on Grand Avenue near Park Avenue on June 14 at 11:05 a.m. Before snatching the phone, Cook allegedly asked the man, “Have you ever been beat up?” An officer activated the phone’s tracking device and then found the phone on Myrtle Avenue near Spencer Street.
Cook was charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, petit larceny, menacing in the third degree, harassment in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-Sha-Ron Dixon, 16, was arrested for allegedly snatching a 23-year-old man’s Nokia cell phone as he walked on Flushing Avenue at North Portland Avenue on June 15 at 6:20 p.m.
Dixon was charged with robbery in the second and third degrees, grand larceny in the fourth degree, petit larceny, menacing in the third degree, harassment in the second degree and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. Another suspect, who is still at large, was also involved in the robbery.
Women’s Shelter Assaults
-A Tillary Street Woman’s Shelter resident smacked a 46-year-old resident over the head with a 7-Up bottle after an exchange of insults in the shelter on June 12 at 9 a.m., police reported. Cops said there were no visible injuries, but the victim was taken to Brooklyn Hospital Center where she was treated and released. No one was arrested, police said.
-A resident of the Tillary Street Women’s Shelter was arrested for allegedly throwing a cell phone at a 21-year-old fellow resident and then biting her left arm and stomach on June 14 at about 7:30 p.m. The victim was taken to the Brooklyn Hospital Center. Her cell phone was not recovered, according to police.
Diane Meghna, 44, was charged with assault in the third degree, menacing in the second and third degrees, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Armed Apartment Robbery
On June 13 at 5:10 p.m., two men allegedly entered a Fulton Street apartment near Saint James Place, threatened the 53-year-old resident with a gun and stole a wallet. One suspect pointed the gun at the resident and ordered, “Give me the money,” police said. The suspects then fled with the wallet – containing $240 in cash, a Citibank MasterCard debit card, a New York State identification card and a New York State identification card. The resident followed them to Lefferts Place – where he saw them go inside a blue four-door Sedan, drive east on Lefferts Place and turn south onto Grand Avenue.
Home Burglary
A 23-year-old man told police that someone entered his apartment on Saint Felix Street near DeKalb Avenue through the rear window and then left with a Sony Viao laptop and a pair of headphones on June 13. Surveillance video shows a thin black man, about six feet tall carrying a book bag and wearing a white short-sleeve collared shirt, blue jeans and a light green baseball cap walk into the back of the house at about 11:45 a.m. and leave about 20 minutes later, police said. A woman who lives in the basement of the building told police that she had seen a strange man in her hallway, and when she asked if he needed help, he ran away. The woman told police that the man in the video is the man she saw in the hallway.
Thefts from Cars
-Someone stole a $40 handbag and a Home Depot credit card from a 58-year-old woman’s car parked on Carlton Avenue between Greene Avenue and Fulton Street in the early morning of June 13. She parked her car at about midnight, and when she returned at 8:10 a.m., the front driver’s side door lock was damaged and her belongings were gone. Police searched the area but could not find the woman’s belongings.
-Someone broke into a car parked on Lefferts Place near Downing Street and stole a Hugo Boss men’s suit and a Tommy Hilfiger men’s shirt. The owner, 35, told police that she parked the car on June 12 at 4:40 p.m., and when she returned the next day at 11:45 a.m., the driver’s side front door lock was damaged and the clothes, worth $1,240, were gone.
Street Arrest
When officers arrested a 50-year-old man who fit the description of a car break-in suspect, they found that the man was wanted for allegedly cashing fraudulent checks eight months ago. Cops confronted the man, who had no identification, on June 11 at 2:35 p.m. on Saint James Place between Clifton Place and Greene Avenue. The man became angry and began to swear, police said. When police searched the man’s belongings, they found that he was carrying someone else’s checkbook. Further investigation showed that he had allegedly used the checks to make withdrawals totaling $1,600 at CitiBank on Oct. 15, 2012.
José Lebron, 50, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree and disorderly conduct, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
Car Thefts
-A 45-year-old man told police that he parked his 1995 Honda Civic on Washington Park between Myrtle and Willoughby Avenues on June 8 at 8:30 a.m., but when he returned on June 11 at 10 p.m., it was gone. Police searched the area but could not find the car. No security cameras are nearby, according to police.
-A 46-year-old woman told police that she parked her 2012 Hyundai on Willoughby Street at Adelphi Street on June 14 at 1 p.m. and when she returned at 3 p.m., it was gone. There was no broken glass at the scene, police said. Police searched the area with the woman, but could not find the car, worth about $26,000.
Evening Guest Trouble
A man who picked up two women on his way home from the bar in the early morning of June 16 told police he suspects that the women burglarized his apartment. The women, who he met on DeKalb Avenue at Vanderbilt Avenue, told him that if he bought them beer they would come to his house and party. He then invited both women into his apartment. While he had sex with one of the women, he ignored the other woman – who he later realized left his apartment. When the woman who was still in the apartment got up to take a phone call, the man realized that a MacBook, an iPhone 3, a Chase Bank credit card and JCrew black suede shoes were missing from his apartment.
He later realized that his credit card was used to purchase Greyhound bus tickets to Dallas, Texas. The man told police that neither his phone nor his laptop has a tracking device.
Domestic Disputes
-A 19-year-old woman told police that her ex-boyfriend punched her in the face, shoved her until she fell to the ground and then choked her in their Ingersoll Houses apartment on June 11 at 1:40 p.m. She sustained redness and a bruise on her neck, but refused medical attention, according to police.
-Kaydian Berrett, 26, was arrested after she allegedly cut her boyfriend with a knife during an argument in their apartment on Grand Avenue near Myrtle Avenue on the evening of June 12. The man, 32, told police that Berrett swung the knife in his face and when he tried to disarm her, she cut his hand. Emergency Medical Services treated the boyfriend, police said.
Berrett was charged with assault in the third degree, menacing in the second and third degrees, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
-Terry Moore, 30, was arrested after he allegedly threw his girlfriend on the bed and choked her following an argument inside their Walt Whitman Houses apartment on June 15 at 5:30 p.m. He then allegedly threw her on the floor and banged her head, according to police. The victim suffered redness, pain and lacerations on her neck, hands and face and scratches on her left leg, police said.
Moore was charged with assault in the third degree, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.
