Spring Equinox Is Here! Time to Talk About Plants
Today we have 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. The sun rose in the exact east and will set in the exact west. We will continue gaining daylight until the Summer Solstice on June 21st. Happy Equinox!
Time for spring planting!
Old man winter gave us a swan song of snow yesterday, and even with the probability of another snow or hard freeze looming on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking plants.
Almanac.com has a wonderful planting table.
If you want to start seeds inside, there is still some time, barely. Brooklyn Seed Company sells seeds selected specifically for city habitat. CNS Family Hardware (584 5th Ave) has both seeds and starts, and Greschlers (660 5th Ave) has a nice selection of gardening supplies. Need a little more time? The Brooklyn Botanical Garden Plant Sale will be April 30 to May 2.
What are your favorite signs of spring?
We know it’s spring when magnolias bloom.
How do you know spring is here? A certain flower? A specific bird’s song? Kids splashing in puddles? Let us know in the comments.
