South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: September 10 – 13

This soggy start to the weekend isn’t going to get us down! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from opera and beer, to the return of Lavinia Draper. Don’t miss these fantabulous events from around the area:

Home Brewed Opera: Back-To-School Edition And Karaoke
When: Thursday, September 10, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Get thee to the cozy confines of Freddy’s, where Home Brewed Opera (a offshoot of Opera on Tap) “sings in the new school year with an A+ program of operatic excerpts all about learnin’.” Afterward, stick around for karaoke with the Dirty Sexy Ensemble.
How much: Free.

Lavinia Draper
When: Thursday, September 10, 10pm
Where: Excelsior, 563 5th Avenue, between 15th and 16th Streets
What: Fresh from summering on Fire Island, Lavinia Draper returns to Brooklyn for a night to remember at Excelsoir’s new 5th Avenue home.
How much: No cover.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, September 11, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, September 11, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Whether you know him as Prince or an unpronounceable symbol, you won’t want to miss this week’s ode to Purple Rain at Dreamland Roller Disco. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, September 12, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: Fido’s popular Coffee Bark returns to Prospect Park on Saturday. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.

Transforming Food
When: Saturdays & Sundays in September, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Roll up your sleeves and learn all about cooking the old fashioned way. Families can look forward to making popcorn with fresh herb butter, apple pies on a rotating basis, churning butter, grinding corn, and pealing apples.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, September 13, 11am-6pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: Feeling hungry? Seek out the gastronomical delights waiting for you at the Prospect Park Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out.

Shellyne Rodriguez At The cHURCH of MONIKA
When: Sunday, September 13, 11am
Where: Open Source Gallery, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue
What: Bronx artist Shellyne Rodriguez heads this month’s cHURCH of MONIKA – “a moderated town hall type of meeting rather than a sermon that explores the role art plays in community” – at Open Source Gallery. In addition to the talk, snacks and coffee will be served.
How much: Free.
