South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 8-11
Hello, weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope over the next few days and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from a CD release party and fall family activities, to Coffee Bark and a Thriller night. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:
The Blue Dahlia CD Release Party
When: Thursday, October 8, 8pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Musician Dahlia Dumot celebrates the release of her new album, The Blue Dahlia, this Thursday at Barbes. A melting pot of sounds from around the world, “Dahlia accompanies herself on ukulele, and sings in both French and English, over reggae, tango, samba, ska and old swing rhythms.” Don’t miss it!
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, October 9, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
Fall Fridays At Lakeside
When: Friday, October 9, 2-6:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Celebrate the cooler weather and falling leaves with the kids on Friday, as Lakeside pays tribute to all things autumn. From 2-4pm, look for free backyard games; from 2-3pm, it’s dancing, music, bubbles, and stories with Puppetsburg; Popfit Kids rocks a fitness class from 3-4pm; and from 4-6:30pm, DJ Dhundee is spinning tunes at the skating rink – where admission is free for all ages.
How much: Free (skate rentals available for $6 plus tax).
Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, October 9, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: “It’s close to midnight, and something evil’s lurking in the dark,” because Thriller (Thriller night) is back at Dreamland this Friday. Rock your best ghoulish attire, and send everyone’s favorite roller disco out with a bang. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).
Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, October 10, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: Fido’s popular Coffee Bark returns to Prospect Park on Saturday. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.
Scharen Knippen
When: Saturdays & Sundays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Get crafty at Lefferts House this October. Cut out autumn and Halloween scenes and patterns – some designed in the 19th century by Mrs. Lefferts herself. Also look for potato sack races and other fun historic toys and games.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, October 11, 11am-6pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: Don’t miss the gastronomical delights waiting for you at this week’s Prospect Park Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out – especially since this is the last one of the season! On Saturday, October 17, Smorgasburg will re-locate to Industry City, so grab your goodies in the hood while you can.
Sunday Night’s Main Event
When: Sunday, October 11, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue
What: End your weekend with some laughs at Freddy’s, where the local favorite will present stand up comedy from 9pm to 11pm.
