South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 22-25

Hello, weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from ukuleles and park haunts, to pumpkin-wielding baboons and a party for a cause. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:

“Unintended,” a photographic exhibition by David Stock
When: Thursday, October 22 – Sunday, November 22.  Thursdays and Fridays 4-7pm; Saturdays and Sundays 11am-7pm. Reception Saturday, October 24, 6-9pm.
Where: 440 Gallery, (440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets.
What: An exhibition of photographs by David Stock. In this series, the city’s chaotic visual layers resolve into moments of unexpected narrative and unplanned beauty. Stock brings his images to life with meticulous printmaking. Formerly a long-time darkroom artisan, he now prints from carefully processed digital files onto fine art papers, using permanent pigment inks. Foto/Text Magazine has described him as a “digital master printer.”

Innov Gnawa
When: Thursday, October 22, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street and 6th Avenue
What: Find your zen spot at Barbes this Thursday, when Innov Gnawa hits the stage with Moroccan trance music.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation

Ukuladies Halloween Performance
When: Friday, October 23, 7-11pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Get ready for Halloween with the Ukuladies, and their “particular brand of good times replete with fire breathing horses, costumes, sugary snacks, dance and sing-alongs, and of course bacon.” You had us at bacon. Don’t forget your costume!
How much: Free.

Live Blues Jam
When: Saturday, October 24, 11am to 2pm
Where: La Boulangerie Lopez, 647 5th Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets
What: Grab your coffee, some delicious Saturday brunch, and then sit back with a few midday blues at La Boulangerie Lopez.
How much: Free

Boo at the Zoo
When: Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25, 11am-4pm
Where: Prospect Park Zoo
What: Learn about bats, watch baboons smash pumpkins, take a trip through the spooky barn, join a costume parade, and enjoy face painting, craft making, and more. Must pay zoo admission, no additional cost for Halloween activities.

Halloween Haunted Walk & Carnival
When: Saturday, October 24, 12-3pm
Where: Nethermead, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a frightful adventure in the park? Ghouls and goblins lurk behind the trees, ready to provide a silly scare at the Prospect Park Alliance’s annual Haunted Walk. Note that young children should be accompanied by an adult. After the Haunted Walk, head over to the Halloween Carnival, which features fun games for children, a visit from Snoopy, and more.
How much: Free.

Scharen Knippen
When: Saturdays & Sundays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Get crafty at Lefferts House this October. Cut out autumn and Halloween scenes and patterns – some designed in the 19th century by Mrs. Lefferts herself. Also look for potato sack races and other fun historic toys and games.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Halloween Party/Fundraiser To Cure Huntington’s Disease
When: Saturday, October 24, 6pm-1am
Where: Leathernecks Tattoo, 667a 5th Avenue
What: For the 5th year in a row, our neighbors at Leathernecks are pulling out all the stops for a charity Halloween bash – with all proceeds going to Terrence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center’s Huntington’s Disease Unit, and to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. In addition to the usual costume contest, 50/50 raffle, and lots of booze, they’ll be raffling off chances to win a free tattoo with any artist in the shop!
How much: $15 suggested donation or $20 to enter the free tattoo raffle.

The Piano Lesson
When: Saturday, October 24, 8pm
Where: The Gallery Players, 199 14th Street
What: Why head to Manhattan when we have such incredible theatre right here in our own neighborhood? Local legend, The Gallery Players, opens their next drama – The Piano Lesson – this Saturday. The shows runs through November 8. For more information or tickets, visit The Gallery Players website.

The Karaoke Constant
When: Sunday, October 25, 8pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Chug a little liquid courage, and then take the Supercollider karaoke stage for a chance to win $25 in free booze.
How much: No cover.
