South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 16-19

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from bar trivia and an alternarock festival to park cleanups and food trucks, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:

Explore NYC’s Natural Side
When: Thursday, October 16, 5:30-8pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Join the Prospect Park Alliance and the Natural Areas Conservancy for a tour of Prospect Park’s woodlands, the largest remaining ancestral forest in Brooklyn, and learn about its important role as an ecosystem for native plants and animals. Afterward, stick around for light refreshments at the Audubon Center.
How much: Free.

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, October 16, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Earn big prizes and bragging rights in Supercollider’s weekly bar trivia match. There’s no cover, but note that admission is restricted to ages 21 and up, so be sure to bring your ID.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, October 17, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Brooklyn Alternarock Fest
When: Friday, October 17, 7:30pm
Where: The Fifth Estate, 506 5th Avenue, between 12th and 13th Streets
What: Start the weekend off with an impressive lineup of bands at the Brooklyn Alternarock Fest.  Modern Diet takes the Fifth Estate stage at 8pm,  followed by The Baby Train at 9pm, Glass The Band (pictured above) at 10pm, Libricide at 11pm, and Valerie Reaper & The Keepers at 12am.
How much: $10

It’s My Park! Day
When: Saturday, October 18, 9am-2pm
Where: 16th Street entrance to Prospect Park
What: Show a little love to our fantastic Prospect Park on It’s My Park! Day. This citywide effort gives folks an opportunity to care for area green spaces with brooms, shovels, rakes, and trash grabbers. The Prospect Park gathering will focus on Lookout Hill with some cleaning, path maintenance, and woodland restoration. There will be a 9am yoga warm-up, free lunch, and t-shirts for all volunteers. Ready to pitch in? Registration is required, so be sure to sign up here.

Book Donation Drop-Off
When: Saturday, October 18, 10am-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: The Friends of Park Slope Library will be accepting donations for its fall fundraising sale at the library (coming up on October 25). Bring gently used books of all genres, plus they’ll accept CDs and DVDs.

Harvest Festival
When: Saturday, October 18,11am-5pm
Where: 6/15 Green, corner of 6th Avenue and 15th Street
What: Stop by to buy some seasonal plants and bulbs and enjoy treats at the bake sale, performances by several musical groups throughout the day, activities for children and adults, and even some yoga sessions. Plus, there will be a community pot luck dinner in the late afternoon — visitors are asked to bring food to share.
How much: Free.

Race Around The Farmyard
When: Saturdays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Nothing says fall like fun at Lefferts Historic House! Families are invited to get moving this month with potato sack races, spoon races, stilts, and other old fashioned games that are sure to bring a smile to the faces of participants both young and old.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, October 19, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: It’s the last food truck rally of the season! Bring your appetite to Grand Army Plaza before they’re gone.

Marek And The Boss Chops
When: Sunday, October 19, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Boogie woogie, rockabilly, and jump blues will explode from Freddy’s 1915 piano on Sunday as the incredible Marek and the Boss Chops hit the stage.
How much: Free.
