South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 15-18
Hello, weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from art exhibitions and films, to zombies and family crafts. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:
Gowanus Open Studios
When: Thursday, October 15 – Sunday, October 18. Times and spaces vary.
Where: Throughout the neighborhood. This map will give you the details.
What: An intriguing 4-day event comes to the neighborhood – and we mean ALL of the neighborhood. You will have an opportunity to visit artists in their studios and speak with them about their work. The studios will be open on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday 18 between 12-6pm, when you can see pieces from more than 300 artists while exploring their workspaces, which stretch from Court Street to 6th Avenue, and from Atlantic Avenue to 14th Street. There are many events surrounding the open studios. We published an article that gives you all the details.
How much: While studio visits are free, some events throughout the weekend do cost. Visit here for details.
Amy Williams: Sanctuary

Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: This is your last chance to see photographer Amy William’s Sanctuary exhibition, which closes Sunday at 440 Gallery. Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Kids or grandkids at school? Take a break for yourself and enjoy a movie at our local library branch. This week’s film showcases Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton, playing a husband and wife on the brink of selling an apartment that they have shared for more than 40 years.
How much: Free.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg heads down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City will house both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to their doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Scharen Knippen
When: Saturdays & Sundays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Get crafty at Lefferts House this October. Cut out autumn and Halloween scenes and patterns – some designed in the 19th century by Mrs. Lefferts herself. Also look for potato sack races and other fun historic toys and games.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
The Walking Dead
When: Sunday, October 18, 9pm
Where: The Monro Pub, 481 5th Avenue (between 11th and 12th Streets)
What: It’s all about zombies at The Monro on Sunday nights, where the local pub is showing The Walking Dead every weekend (with sound, of course). Don’t worry, though. When the apocalypse happens, South Slope is ready.
How much: Free.
