South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: October 1 – 4

Welcome to the first (and very damp) weekend of October! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from book talks and art, to classical duets and an ode to goth. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:

BOOKISH: Writers Talking
When: Thursday, October 1, 7:30-9pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join Kensington novelist Amy Shearn as she hosts her popular interview series at the Park Slope Library. This week, author James Hannaham is on hand to talk about his latest novel, Delicious Foods. Books will be available for purchase.  
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, September 25, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: It’s going to be “Just Like Heaven” at Lakeside this Friday, when Dreamland Roller Disco raises a glass to those glorious days of Cure and Goth. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

Scharen Knippen
When: Saturdays & Sundays in October, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Get crafty at Lefferts House this October. Cut out autumn and Halloween scenes and patterns – some designed in the 19th century by Mrs. Lefferts herself. Also look for potato sack races and other fun historic toys and games.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Opening Reception: Savas Boyraz’s Back Drop
When: Saturday, October 3, 7-9pm
Where: Open Source Gallery, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue
What: Kurdish artist Savas Boyraz introduces his new video installation, Back Drop, an exploration of the stories of individual Kurdish guerrilla fighters using portraiture, with an opening reception at Open Source on Saturday night. Back Drop is on display through November 1.
How much: Free.

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, October 4, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: There are only two Sundays left for this season’s Food Truck Rally, so be sure to stop on by and get your fill from some of the city’s best food trucks.

Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, October 4, 11am-6pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: Don’t completely fill up on those food trucks, though, because there are gastronomical delights waiting for you at the Prospect Park Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out.

Me, Myself And Eye
When: Sunday, October 4, 4:40pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: 440 Gallery kicks off the October edition of their Me, Myself and Eye performance series on Sunday with Gentile/Romano – a flute and guitar duo featuring Michel Gentile on flute and Tony Romano on guitar.
How Much: Free.
