South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: November 5-8

The first full weekend of November is here! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from books sales and multimedia art, to hot glass and cold beer. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area:

“Unintended,” a photographic exhibition by David Stock
When: Thursdays and Fridays 4-7pm; Saturdays and Sundays 11am-7pm through November 22.
Where: 440 Gallery, (440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets.
What: An exhibition of photographs by David Stock. In this series, the city’s chaotic visual layers resolve into moments of unexpected narrative and unplanned beauty. Stock brings his images to life with meticulous printmaking. Formerly a long-time darkroom artisan, he now prints from carefully processed digital files onto fine art papers, using permanent pigment inks. Foto/Text Magazine has described him as a “digital master printer.”

Friends Of Park Slope Library Preview Book Sale
When: Thursday, November 5, 5-7pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue (at 9th Street)
What: The early bird catches the worm this Thursday, when Friends of Park Slope Library open their book sale doors for a Thursday sneak peek. A $10 admission will give attendees first dibs on a huge selection of used books. All proceeds benefit Park Slope Library.
How much: $10 Admission

Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg heads down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City will house both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to their doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).

Friends Of Park Slope Library Book Sale
When: Saturday, November 7, 11am-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue (at 9th Street)
What: Couldn’t make it to the preview sale? No worries! There will be plenty of books, DVDs and more to go around on Saturday as the official 2015 Park Slope Library book sale kicks off. Come out, grab a few new novels, and support our neighborhood branch.
How much: Free.

Park Slope/Windsor Terrace Open Studio Tour
When: Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 12-6pm
Where: Various locations. See map for details.
What: Meet your artistic neighbors in this weekend’s open studio tour, see their work, ask them questions, and maybe even find a piece to add to your collection. The event is free, and all studios are within walking distance of each other.
How Much: Free.

Hot Glass, Cold Beer
When: Saturday, November 7, 7-11pm
Where: Brooklyn Glass, 142 13th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Watch talented local artisans created beautiful glassworks, while drinking bottomless booze from your very own handcrafted glass – what’s not to love! The event is open to all ages, but note that you must have a valid ID to drink.
How much: Tickets are $20, and can be purchased here.

Opening Reception: Mira Gáberová Presents Statue of Everything
When: Saturday, November 7, 7-9pm
Where: Open Source Gallery, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue
What: All the world is a stage – especially this month at Open Source Gallery – where artist Mira Gáberová presents her new multimedia installation, Statue of Everything. Join Mira for an opening reception Saturday evening, and explore her works.
How much: Free.

Made in Brooklyn: An Essential Guide to the Borough’s Artisanal Food & Drink
When: Sunday, November 8, 4-5:30pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Street
What: Join authors Susanne König and Melissa Schreiber Vaughan at Powerhouse on 8th this Sunday, as they talk about their new book,Made in Brooklyn: An Essential Guide to the Borough’s Artisanal Food & Drink. Wine will be served, and you’ll also have the opportunity to purchase books for signing. Reservations can be made by emailing RSVP@POWERHOUSEon8th.com or by visiting the store’s website.
