South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: November 20-23
Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from Brooklyn country and steel guitars, to art auctions and family dance parties, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:
Raphael McGregor And Alex Battles
When: Thursday, November 20, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s all about country and steel guitars at Freddy’s on Thursday night, when Raphael McGregor takes the stage at 8pm, followed by Alex Battles at 9pm.
How much: Free.
Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, November 20, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Prove your deep, embarrassing knowledge of all things trivial at this weekly trivia night, which has been called NYC’s best bar trivia by the Village Voice.
How much: Free.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, November 21, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.
South Slope Silent Auction
When: Friday, November 21, 6:30-9pm
Where: Old Stone House, 5th Avenue, between 3rd and 4th Streets
What: Get a jump on your holiday shopping, or redecorate your own home, with some impressive finds at the 5th annual South Slope Silent Auction. Local artists have donated pieces to the event, and all proceeds benefit our neighbors at PS 295. Small nibbles are included, and beer and wine are available for a suggested donation.
How much: Free.
History In Your Hands: Paper Quilting
When: Saturdays and Sundays in November, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Spend a cozy afternoon at Lefferts Historic House this month making your own paper quilt collage to add to their community patchwork quilt.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Family Dance Party
When: Saturday, November 22, 2:30-4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: “Bop, shake, and shimmy” at this family dance event on Saturday. All ages are invited to participate.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for admission and space is limited. Stop by the reference desk early to secure your spot.
Nature Playtime
When: Sunday, November 23, 12-3pm
Where: Zucker Natural Exploration Area
What: Sunday’s temperatures are supposed to warm up a bit, so come out with the kids and explore the natural areas of Prospect Park during Nature Playtime. This weekend, guides will lead seasonal Pop-Up Audubon activities at the amazing Zucker Natural Exploration Area.
How much: Free.
Obsolete Cinema Presents: Homeland Insecurity
When: Sunday, November 23, 82pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: It’s a double feature! First up, the ridiculous 1984 Red Dawn, where Patrick Swayze and pals battle the Russkies as they invade the heartland. That’s followed by another by screenwriter John Milius — 1941, the Spielberg-helmed mega-fiasco where John Belushi and co. have to defend the California coast. And save Christmas.
