South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: May 28-31

May is coming to a close, but with everything from delicious food and Molly Ringwald, to art and charitable drinking, folks hanging around the Slope won’t have to go far for fun. Below are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood.

Dollars To Degrees: Funding Your Child’s Education
When: Thursday, May 28, 6-7:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: We all know college is expensive (really expensive), but financial planner and wealth advisor, Mina Black’s, Thursday workshop should help ease some of your anxiety. Black will discuss “ways to pay for college using saving plans, financial aid, work study, and loans as well as the differences and advantages between different college savings vehicles.”
How much: Free.

fish at Liman in Sheepshead Bay

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, May 28, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Slap on that thinking cap and tackle a few rounds of trivia over at Supercollider. Big prizes and bragging rights await the winner.
How much: No cover.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, May 29, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, May 29, 7:30pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you ever dreamed of joining the Brat Pack, your moment has arrived. This week’s Dreamland Roller Disco is all about that ’80s goddess Molly Ringwald, so you’ll definitely want to bust out those feather bangs and shoulder pads! Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.
How much: $18 (includes admission and skate rental).

South Slope Artists Rock!!
When: Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31, 1-6pm
Where: MADarts, 255 18th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues
What: If you’ve been itching to explore some of our local talent, don’t miss South Slope Artists Rock this weekend. The tour hits some of the neighborhood’s best galleries, including MADarts, Open Source, and 440 Gallery. Best of all, it’s free!
How much: Free.

Fleece Fun
When: Saturdays and Sundays in May, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Ever wondered how wool was used on a Colonial farm? Visit Lefferts House weekends in May to brush wool with carding paddles, spin yarn using a drop spindle, and even make a felt ball to take home with you. Ewe won’t want to miss it!
How much: $3 suggested donation.

The Monro Pub 3 Year Anniversary Party
When: Saturday, May 30, 9pm
Where: The Monro Pub, 481 5th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Street
What: Come out to Monro on Saturday and help our own bit of Liverpool ring in three years! There will be food, drinks, and karaoke…be there!
How much: Free!

South Slope Artists Rock!! Opening Reception
When: Sunday, May 31, 7-9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Top off a tour of South Slope’s best galleries with drinks a Freddy’s! The opening reception for South Slope Artists Rock takes place at the local favorite from 7-9pm. As an added bonus, there will be drink and beer specials starting at 8pm over in the Frontroom for a Barman’s Fund night! All bar tips go to charity, so feel good about those shots, because you’re drinking for a good cause!
How much: No cover.
